When most people picture tree felling, they imagine a lumberjack making a scarf cut and the entire tree crashing spectacularly to the ground. In modern residential gardens across West Yorkshire, this straight-fell scenario is almost never possible.
Surrounded by bespoke stone boundary walls, glass conservatories, timber outbuildings, sensitive telecommunication cables, and narrow access alleyways, removing large trees requires surgical precision. That is where sectional dismantling and advanced rigging techniques come into their own.
The Challenge: A Declining 50ft Sycamore in a Landlocked Garden
Recently in Calderdale, we were tasked with removing a declining 50ft Sycamore whose root heave was actively destabilizing a dry-stone retaining wall directly above a customer's rear patio. Access was restricted to a single 2.5ft garden gate.
Straight felling was out of the question: any dropped branch risked smashing flagstones, outbuildings, or neighbor fencing.
The Method: Sectional Dismantling & Friction Lowering
Here is how our certified climbing tree surgeons execute tight-access dismantling:
- High Anchor Points & SRT Climbing: Using Single Rope Technique (SRT), our lead tree surgeon ascended into the upper canopy to install specialized false crotch pulleys and friction rigging rings.
- Rigging Lines & Ground Bollards: Heavy limbs—some weighing over 250kg—were individually notched and tied off with dynamic rigging lowering ropes before being cut. At ground level, our groundsman regulated line tension through a high-friction tree-mounted lowering bollard, controlling descent to mere inches per second.
- Zip-Lining Timber Away from Obstacles: For branches hanging directly above glass roofs, we rigged tensioned traverse zip-lines to fly timber horizontally across the canopy and land it cleanly in an open clearance drop zone.
- Trunk Sectioning: Once branches were cleared, the central trunk was dismantled in controlled cylindrical "chog" sections, lowered one by one.
Zero Property Damage, Spotless Garden
By 4:00 PM, all timber was chipped or sectioned for log firewood, the stump was ground flat 12 inches below grade, and the entire garden and driveway were raked and leaf-blown clean. Not a single stone or plant was disturbed.
